Best staplers for teachers

Most parents struggle to get their children to do anything. At times it feels as though children are just bent on opposing everything that their parents bring up.

Now, imagine trying to get 20 children to do anything. Teachers are up against it. Bless their hearts. The amount of creativity and willpower that it requires to manage a classroom is incredible.

One of the key elements of learning is creating things. Teachers create diagrams and charts. These are then used to simplify the explanation of somewhat complex concepts to these young minds.

One of the greatest tools in any educator’s arsenal is their stapler. These tools help to put things together and keep them together.

What is the best stapler for teachers?

Well, the market is packed with great picks, as well as some pretenders. Making the choice of which one to buy can be a minefield of sorts.

We have done the hard work for you. This guide will help you choose the best stapler for teachers.

Why It’s Our Top Pick?

Here is our absolute number one stapler for teachers. If you are looking for one stapler that will handle a vast array of tasks that are likely to be handled by a teacher, this will do.

It requires very little effort to staple. The stapling is assisted by a lever-like system that is connected to a spring.

The spring does most of the work when you are stapling.

This also offers the sort of versatility that a classroom requires. You will be able to use it for your general stapling task, arts and crafts, large stacks of paper, and for pinning things onto the bulletin board.

You will not be disappointed with the looks either. There’s a lovely black rubber grip at the top, a nice blue body, and a silver cartridge.

Swingline Commercial Desk Stapler

#1. Our Overall Top Pick

Swingline Commercial Desk Stapler

Our Rating

You have got to be doing something right to survive and thrive for as long as Swingline has.

The Swingline Commercial Desk Stapler is our first pick for teachers.

The simple design is minimalist. It does not have any “bells and whistles”, but it does exactly what you need it to do.

It has the ability to fasten together up to 20 sheets of paper at once. Add this to a sturdy, all metal body for maximum durability.

It will sit well on top of a school desk or teacher’s table. The bottom has some rubber studs that stop it from sliding off at will. This will often happen when kids are involved.

You can keep up to 210 staples at a time in the cartridge. When you run low, the orange “low-staple” indicator will let you know.

The less you are seen to the opening it the better. For pinning and tacking things onto your bulletin board, the stapler unlatches.

This is a great feature for schools and classrooms. The inner-rail of the cartridge is creatively constructed to minimise jamming.

It takes the standard ¼” staples. The Swingline S.F. 4 Premium Staples are the manufacturer recommended ones.

There’s also a reversible anvil to turn the staples for easy removal when you are pinning temporarily.

Having a lifetime warranty is an added bonus! If you get a defective one, you can return it.

Bostitch Office Executive Stapler

Bostitch inPOWER+28 Executive Stapler 3 in 1 Stapler

If you would like something that makes stapling effortless. This is the one. Have you heard about the one-finger stapling technology? Well the Bostitch inPower Executive has it!

The unique selling point of this stapler is that you can get the job with just one finger. That is minimal squeeze or pressure.

The design is such that the front end of the stapler is elevated. This gives it a lever-like angle. Just below this lever is a complementary tool that connects to a spring.

It is the spring that assists with the job and makes our lives easier.

You can fasten together up to 28 sheets of paper. There is space for 210 staples in the cartridge. If that is not large enough for you, there’s a storage compartment at the bottom.

This is extra space to keep your spare staples.

The body of the stapler is made out of die-cast metal. You can tell from the final product that some thought was put into its looks as well.

There is a soft grip handle over the top. You wouldn’t use this when stapling.

It comes handy when removing staples with the staple remover that is at the back of the stapler.

It also unlatches up to 180 degrees. This makes it a worthy companion for arts and crafts, as well as for tacking things onto your bulletin board.

Refilling it is a lot more casual. It is done with the stapler upside down.

The cartridge can be pulled out when empty and pushed back in once replenished.

Swingline Stapler Red 747

Swingline Stapler 747

If you want to have that all-metal construction durability, here is another one – The Swingline 747. The red version of this was made an icon due to its appearance on a TV programme, Office Space.

This is what endeared this company, and the product to the American public. It brought Swingline into the mainstream.

And they haven’t disappointed.

The first feature that comes to mind is the specialised railing. This was designed to minimise or eradicate jamming. You can fasten together up to 25 sheets at a time.

It takes the ¼” staples. However, the manufacturer recommends using it with the Swingline S.F. 4 Premium Staples.

The reasoning behind this is that it cuts the risk of jamming. The staples and the specialised railing work well together.

You can also unlatch it up to 180 degrees for bulletin board pinning and tacking. There is no pulling apart either.

You just press a button at the back and it opens up.

It also has the ability to produce temporary pins that are more pointed. These are easier to remove. To produce this, you push the anvil up and reverse it.

You can rest assured of their quality with the performance guarantee that Swingline back with a Lifetime Warranty.

Pros

  • It’s a classic American stapler.
  • Sturdy, solid and durable.
  • Clearly well made and looks good.
  • The rubber bottom is well suited to gripping the desk to stop it sliding off when pushed or bumped into.
  • Good range of colours to choose from.

Cons

  • Fits the standard staples, but increasingly jams when using ones that are not made by the manufacturer.
  • Requires considerable effort to staple multiple sheets.
  • 25 sheets are a struggle to staple with this. 20 is a reasonable maximum. They seem to have caught onto this, as some of their more recent packages now say 20.

Bostitch Ascend 3 in 1 Stapler

Bostitch Office B210R-PINK Bostitch Ascend 3 in 1 Stapler

Your favourite stapler has met its match. These are the words that the manufacturer uses to describe this product – the Bostitch Office Ascend 3 in 1.

If you are looking to buy in volume for your class, the price would be an attractive factor.

It has a simple reloading mechanism with a spring. The spring coils backwards when the cartridge is opened.

Once you have loaded the staples, the spring recoils. This mechanism minimises the risk jamming. However, the pressure may also be implicated in jamming when staples enter at an angle.

It also has the unlatching feature for sticking or tacking onto bulletin boards. This is a handy feature for arts and crafts. There is room to store an extra batch of staples.

Where there may be a lot of hands handling your stapler, the antimicrobial properties go a long way. It is also kinder to our environment. 70% of the stapler is made out of recyclable material.

You can fasten together up to 20 sheets of paper at once. It is lightweight and easy to use. The standard ¼” staples can be used in this as well.

At the rear end of the stapler is a staple remover. You also have your pick of 10 colours and shades.

AmazonBasics Stapler

Basics Stapler

Basics is a cheaper in line of products. This stapler has a 10 staple fastening capacity. The cartridge holds a total of 200 staples.

This allows you to maintain productivity for long periods. Any time that is used to fiddle with staples is wasted.

The stapler unlatches open to allow for tacking onto bulletin boards. Its anvil is reversible, for temporary stapling and pinning.

At the bottom is a rubber base. This makes it steadier when placed on tables or desks. The rear end is geared with a staple remover.

A matte black finish gives it a sleek look. It also comes with a box of 1000 staples to get you started.

With most items that are made in the volume that this stapler is, you are bound to get some anomalies.

The vast number of users are pleased with it, and the work it does. However, there are some disgruntled users.

Jamming has been the main issue raised. The worst case scenario is when it doesn’t work from the get-go.

ACI1118 inPOWER 28 Premium Desktop Stapler

PaperPro ACI1118 In-Power 28 Premium Desktop Stapler

The first thing that struck me about the PaperPro In-Power 28 Stapler is its uncanny resemblance to the Bostitch inPOWER+28 Executive Stapler 3 in 1 Stapler.

The similarity in the names as well tells us that this is not something that is lost on the manufacturers.

If you were to remove the branding and place them next to one another, it would be difficult to tell them apart.

The difference in price would also be harder to explain, in that case. Further research revealed that the companies fall under the same manufacturer umbrella.

The products are designed by the same people, manufactured by the same people and sold by the same people.

As a brand name, PaperPro is more popular. This would probably explain why the price is a little steeper. As far as features and functionality are concerned, you will not be able to tell them apart.

This can staple up to 25 sheets at once. We pushed it a bit further to see how far it could go. It was able to fasten 30 sheets of paper with very little effort from us.

This truly embodies the easy one-finger stapling technology, with spring assistance. Effortless stapling is what you may describe this as.

As the number of sheets being stapled increases, the effort required obviously increases as well. If you work with large stacks of paper frequently, this may not be the one for you.

However, as long as you keep it within the recommended range, you’ll be happy with the results.

While it does the job, you will not be able to do it discreetly. Having multiple staplers of this model working at the same time may drive you crazy.

It is not too loud, but it definitely can’t be missed. This is something a teacher would need to consider if the stapler is going to be in a child’s hand.

More so if you are looking to buy a few of these.

Make sure you check out our Best Staple Gun For Insulation for more great stapler reviews.

Pros

  • A reliable and durable stapler. Can easily last years.
  • Easy to use, and easy to refill.
  • Comfortably delivers on the 25 sheets at once claim.
  • A little more expensive than another identical one.

Cons

  • A little noisier than other staplers.
  • Easy to break if you force the cartridge open.

Sparco Long Reach Stapler

Sparco Long Reach Stapler

A long reaching stapler is also important for teachers. One moment they are stapling a couple of A4 papers together. The next moment it is an A2 cardboard chart. We needed to find a stapler that could meet this need.

The Sparco Long Reach Stapler can be adjusted for up to 12” at the throat. This is how far from the edge of a sheet you will be able to staple.

You can move the adjustment lever backwards or forward, depending on the size of the sheet you are working on.

It is great for:

  • Book Binding
  • Putting pamphlets together
  • Mounting cards
  • Tacking
  • Putting brochures together

You can staple up to 20 sheets together. This is slightly lower than we would have expected from it. Don’t let the looks fool you, it is not a heavy duty stapler.

This means you can use the standard ¼” staples in this one as well. The sort of paper you choose will depend on what you are working on.

You will not be limited by the stapler.

Here’s a pro-tip. If you find that the stapler is struggling to get through the material you are working on. Consider getting chisel-pointed staples.

As the name suggests, they are sharper. This will make life a lot easier. Although having these ones around children increases the risk of injury.

This is the sort of stapler that you don’t realise you need until you have it.

You should take a look at our Best Staple Gun for Picture Framing post for some great framing picks.

Pros

  • The adjustable throat gives it great versatility.
  • Simple but fully functional design.
  • Budget-friendly.
  • Not known to jam frequently

Cons

  • Does not make for great aesthetics on a desk.
  • There is no safety feature for holding the staples in the cartridge. It can easily pop open.

Pros

Cons

  • Wish the red marker on the guiding tool could lock.
  • The design makes it difficult to unjam.

Bostitch No-Jam Booklet Stapler

Bostitch No-Jam Booklet Stapler

As novelty goes, this is definitely up there where staplers are concerned. The design is unlike any other that we have encountered.

There is an increased emphasis on all but eradicating the jamming issue. Most staplers jam as the staple exits the lower part of the cartridge.

This one doesn’t have that lower part. It has been replaced without negatively impacting functionality.

If you are working on pamphlets, brochures or booklets, this will go a long way. The entire body is made of metal.

You can rest assured that this is a durable stapler. It takes the standard ¼” staples. The manufacturer encourages the use of the Bostitch Premium Standard Staples.

I would say if you are looking to use it on booklets or arts and crafts, chisel point staples are a good choice.

The saddle design allows for easier alignment of booklets when preparing to staple. You can fasten together up to 20 sheets at once.

The rubber base provides added safety from skidding and sliding off surfaces.

As if it isn’t already versatile enough, you can also unlatch it for tacking onto bulletin boards. It also has the ability to switch between temporary and permanent stapling.

There’s a reload window that alerts you when you are running low on staples.

Don’t know what a Plier Stapler is? Read our review to find our and get our top picks.

Pros

  • Purpose made.
  • Offers great versatility.
  • A great alternative to the long arm

Cons

  • Could do with an arm guiding ruler.

What makes a Stapler good for teachers?

Seeing as we are all humans, you may think that teachers do not need staplers that are any different from any one of us. That would be a misguided opinion to have. Anyone’s needs when it comes to a stapler are governed by who will use it, and for what it would be used. Granted, some of the uses that teachers get out of the staplers are no different to ours.

However, there are certain tasks and challenges that their stapler has to endure that ours never encounter. To narrow this down, I have identified 3 key aspects that would be important to teachers.

Now is a good time to point out that while teachers can just pick up an Office Stapler, the needs are usually quite different:

Safety

Wherever children are involved safety is of uttermost importance. There is no universal way to look at this. The first consideration is how old the children are. When they are younger, small safety measures tend to go a long way. As they grow older, they start to explore more. This also means that they start to understand what not to do.

As far as safety is concerned, you want a compact stapler. It has to be difficult for children to pull it apart. You want one that makes it a little challenging to open the staples cartridge.

One of the things that I tried as a child when we got an electric stapler was to see if I could place my finger on the sensor and then avoid being stapled. You would be glad to know that the sensor didn’t trigger the stapler. My finger survived that ordeal. Children are bound to be curious.

If possible, get a stapler that does not allow enough room for a finger or any other part of the body to fit in.

Ease of Use

You can barely afford to bat an eyelid when looking after a group of children. This is why having a stapler that is easy to use is important. You want one that does not require you to be extra attentive. There are also tasks that children could potentially be able to assist you with. Having a safe stapler that is easy to use is important. Ease of use should not come at the expense of safety.

Durability

You can almost guarantee that a teacher’s stapler will be dropped. The teacher will drop it. Students will also drop it. The construction of the stapler has to be robust enough to take some falls. A steel or metal stapler will do the job. Some plastic staplers are also strong enough to survive the knock of a few falls.

About Cost

Teachers are infamously underpaid. Getting the cost right is always important. This should not be done at the expense of quality or durability. They say if you buy cheap, you usually pay twice. As you can imagine, the plastic ones are cheaper. The steel and electric ones will have higher price.

It is always worth noting that price is never a clear indicator of quality. People price based on manufacturing costs, and their brand. This is why you see more and more of the manufacturing of items being taken outside the US. It is impossible to compete with the cheap production costs that countries like China and Taiwan offer.

It is the responsibility of the brand to make sure that its quality is maintained in manufacturing.

Heavy Duty or Light Duty Stapler?

There is a case to be made for both heavy duty and light duty staplers for teachers. Heavy duty staplers generally mean that production increases, as does speed. You will usually find that heavy duty staplers are “weightier” than the light duty ones. It seems fairly obvious, but still worth mentioning. From a health a safety point of view, teachers would probably want to stay clear of these ones.

If you are looking after a class of children that are a bit older, you maybe able to get away with having a heavy duty stapler. The other side of this is that having a heavy duty stapler would allow you to get more work done in less time. If you have a lot of stapling to do, getting a heavy duty would be a good idea.

Light duty staplers are generally easier to carry around. They are light enough for most children to carry and use. If you are on a budget, the light-duty staplers are the way to go.

The Case for going Electric

We have not picked any electric staplers as part of our top picks for teachers. This is not to say that they are no good. When considering them in the context of a school setting, we decided that the manual ones had more merit.

One of the great things about electric staplers is that they take away the manual part of stapling. Instead of having to squeeze or press down your stapler each time, you simply have to place the paper underneath the sensor.

Within a school setting, they would allow for children to be able to use staplers safely. You can get the children to be more involved in stapling while working on projects. They have more safety features. For instance, it is much harder to eject the cartridge. To avoid children playing with them unnecessarily, you can remove the batteries or the power adaptor.

The main downside for these is the cost factor. If you have no budget constraint, going electric may be a good call.

Aesthetics

Getting the aesthetics right can be tricky within a school setting. One that is too subtle may be unengaging. One that is too attractive will likely attract the wrong attention. The best way to consider this aspect is to think of it based on usage and storage.

If the stapler will only be used by the teacher and stored out of reach of anyone else, buy whatever look you’d like. If you are getting them for children, you may want to consider getting ones that are aesthetically suited to them.

Toddlers

Having toddlers in the class may complicate things a bit. The good thing is they are largely unable to reach most things. They also tend to follow instructions within a classroom setting. When buying a stapler that will be around toddler safety has to be the main aspect to consider.

  • Make sure that the stapler is not too heavy, as it will cause a lot of harm if it was to fall on them.
  • It shouldn’t be too sturdy either. If they pick it up and throw it at another child, that is a disaster waiting to occur.
  • Go with plastic. Not something that will easily fall apart, but one that mitigates as much of the safety risk as possible.

Best Stapler for Booklets

For booklets, you would either want to go with the long arm staplers or the Bostitch No-Jam Booklet Stapler. If we had to pick just one it would be the latter. This is mainly because it is purpose made. There is room to place your booklet on a raised platform for accurate stapling. Booklets are more likely to cause jamming than smaller bundles of paper when stapling. Having a stapler that has a “no-jam” mechanism will go further than you can imagine.

The only criticism we have for this one is the lack of a ruler and marker. These would make life a lot easier. Once you have the right placement for a project, you could use that as a template for whatever else follows. As a workaround for this, we suggest using a marker pen. A red one would do well on the black surface.

Once you have the perfect placement on the platform, use your red marker to note the position. You would simply have to clear off the marks at the end of the project. It is not ideal, but in this case, it is a worthy trade-off for the advantages that this stapler brings to the table.

Are you stapling lots of books? If so, you should check out our Saddle Stapler guide here.

How to use a stapler for bulletin board

Please note that it is not all staplers that can perform this task.

There are two ways to check:

  • Look for a release button or hook at the rear end of your stapler. If it is there, it should be near the hinged end. Once you have found it, use it to open the stapler 180 degrees.
  • If there isn’t a release option, try to manually open it. Put one hand on the top and another one on the bottom. Do this at the unhinged side of the stapler. Try to gently pull it apart. Don’t force it.

Let’s assume that you have managed to open the stapler. Place it flat on a desk. Keep the end with the cartridge held shut as you lift it.

Hold it against the bulletin board and squeeze.

You will find that some staples only open up to 90 degrees. These are not perfect for bulletin boards. They would do a job for arts and crafts though. Don’t write them off yet.

Best stapler for bulletin board tacking

Bulletin boards a slightly easier. The only condition is that the stapler should be able to unlatch and open up to a 180-degree angle. There are quite a few on our list that fits the bill. If we had to pick just one, it would have to be Bostitch Office B210R-PINK Bostitch Ascend 3 in 1 Stapler. It does not limit you to just tacking. This one gives you a variety of additional features that are handy for tacking.

You will certainly need to get staples off the board when you want to pin new ones. The integrated staple remover will handle this for you. It is environmentally friendly. 70% of the material used to make it is recyclable. This is something that adds to those little teaching moments that a teacher will have with students.

It is also affordable. Although it is made of plastic, it is durable. Additionally, you also get 10 colours to choose from.

Final Words

This best stapler for teachers review will guide you in finding a great stapler for yourself or to buy as a gift for a teacher. If you took the time to read the whole post, you will have also learned some of the most important things to consider when finding your next stapler.
