The similarity in the names as well tells us that this is not something that is lost on the manufacturers.

If you were to remove the branding and place them next to one another, it would be difficult to tell them apart.

The difference in price would also be harder to explain, in that case. Further research revealed that the companies fall under the same manufacturer umbrella.

The products are designed by the same people, manufactured by the same people and sold by the same people.

As a brand name, PaperPro is more popular. This would probably explain why the price is a little steeper. As far as features and functionality are concerned, you will not be able to tell them apart.

This can staple up to 25 sheets at once. We pushed it a bit further to see how far it could go. It was able to fasten 30 sheets of paper with very little effort from us.

This truly embodies the easy one-finger stapling technology, with spring assistance. Effortless stapling is what you may describe this as.

As the number of sheets being stapled increases, the effort required obviously increases as well. If you work with large stacks of paper frequently, this may not be the one for you.

What makes a Stapler good for teachers?

Seeing as we are all humans, you may think that teachers do not need staplers that are any different from any one of us. That would be a misguided opinion to have. Anyone’s needs when it comes to a stapler are governed by who will use it, and for what it would be used. Granted, some of the uses that teachers get out of the staplers are no different to ours.

However, there are certain tasks and challenges that their stapler has to endure that ours never encounter. To narrow this down, I have identified 3 key aspects that would be important to teachers.

Now is a good time to point out that while teachers can just pick up an Office Stapler, the needs are usually quite different:

Safety

Wherever children are involved safety is of uttermost importance. There is no universal way to look at this. The first consideration is how old the children are. When they are younger, small safety measures tend to go a long way. As they grow older, they start to explore more. This also means that they start to understand what not to do.

As far as safety is concerned, you want a compact stapler. It has to be difficult for children to pull it apart. You want one that makes it a little challenging to open the staples cartridge.

One of the things that I tried as a child when we got an electric stapler was to see if I could place my finger on the sensor and then avoid being stapled. You would be glad to know that the sensor didn’t trigger the stapler. My finger survived that ordeal. Children are bound to be curious.

If possible, get a stapler that does not allow enough room for a finger or any other part of the body to fit in.

Ease of Use

You can barely afford to bat an eyelid when looking after a group of children. This is why having a stapler that is easy to use is important. You want one that does not require you to be extra attentive. There are also tasks that children could potentially be able to assist you with. Having a safe stapler that is easy to use is important. Ease of use should not come at the expense of safety.

Durability

You can almost guarantee that a teacher’s stapler will be dropped. The teacher will drop it. Students will also drop it. The construction of the stapler has to be robust enough to take some falls. A steel or metal stapler will do the job. Some plastic staplers are also strong enough to survive the knock of a few falls.

About Cost

Teachers are infamously underpaid. Getting the cost right is always important. This should not be done at the expense of quality or durability. They say if you buy cheap, you usually pay twice. As you can imagine, the plastic ones are cheaper. The steel and electric ones will have higher price.

Heavy Duty or Light Duty Stapler?

There is a case to be made for both heavy duty and light duty staplers for teachers. Heavy duty staplers generally mean that production increases, as does speed. You will usually find that heavy duty staplers are “weightier” than the light duty ones. It seems fairly obvious, but still worth mentioning. From a health a safety point of view, teachers would probably want to stay clear of these ones.

If you are looking after a class of children that are a bit older, you maybe able to get away with having a heavy duty stapler. The other side of this is that having a heavy duty stapler would allow you to get more work done in less time. If you have a lot of stapling to do, getting a heavy duty would be a good idea.

Light duty staplers are generally easier to carry around. They are light enough for most children to carry and use. If you are on a budget, the light-duty staplers are the way to go.

The Case for going Electric

We have not picked any electric staplers as part of our top picks for teachers. This is not to say that they are no good. When considering them in the context of a school setting, we decided that the manual ones had more merit.

One of the great things about electric staplers is that they take away the manual part of stapling. Instead of having to squeeze or press down your stapler each time, you simply have to place the paper underneath the sensor.

Within a school setting, they would allow for children to be able to use staplers safely. You can get the children to be more involved in stapling while working on projects. They have more safety features. For instance, it is much harder to eject the cartridge. To avoid children playing with them unnecessarily, you can remove the batteries or the power adaptor.

The main downside for these is the cost factor. If you have no budget constraint, going electric may be a good call.

Aesthetics

Getting the aesthetics right can be tricky within a school setting. One that is too subtle may be unengaging. One that is too attractive will likely attract the wrong attention. The best way to consider this aspect is to think of it based on usage and storage.

If the stapler will only be used by the teacher and stored out of reach of anyone else, buy whatever look you’d like. If you are getting them for children, you may want to consider getting ones that are aesthetically suited to them.

Toddlers

Having toddlers in the class may complicate things a bit. The good thing is they are largely unable to reach most things. They also tend to follow instructions within a classroom setting. When buying a stapler that will be around toddler safety has to be the main aspect to consider.

• Make sure that the stapler is not too heavy, as it will cause a lot of harm if it was to fall on them.
• It shouldn’t be too sturdy either. If they pick it up and throw it at another child, that is a disaster waiting to occur.
• Go with plastic. Not something that will easily fall apart, but one that mitigates as much of the safety risk as possible.

Best Stapler for Booklets

For booklets, you would either want to go with the long arm staplers or the Bostitch No-Jam Booklet Stapler. If we had to pick just one it would be the latter. This is mainly because it is purpose made. There is room to place your booklet on a raised platform for accurate stapling. Booklets are more likely to cause jamming than smaller bundles of paper when stapling. Having a stapler that has a “no-jam” mechanism will go further than you can imagine.

The only criticism we have for this one is the lack of a ruler and marker. These would make life a lot easier. Once you have the right placement for a project, you could use that as a template for whatever else follows. As a workaround for this, we suggest using a marker pen. A red one would do well on the black surface.

Once you have the perfect placement on the platform, use your red marker to note the position. You would simply have to clear off the marks at the end of the project. It is not ideal, but in this case, it is a worthy trade-off for the advantages that this stapler brings to the table.

How to use a stapler for bulletin board

Please note that it is not all staplers that can perform this task.

There are two ways to check:

• Look for a release button or hook at the rear end of your stapler. If it is there, it should be near the hinged end. Once you have found it, use it to open the stapler 180 degrees.
• If there isn’t a release option, try to manually open it. Put one hand on the top and another one on the bottom. Do this at the unhinged side of the stapler. Try to gently pull it apart. Don’t force it.

Let’s assume that you have managed to open the stapler. Place it flat on a desk. Keep the end with the cartridge held shut as you lift it.

Hold it against the bulletin board and squeeze.

You will find that some staples only open up to 90 degrees. These are not perfect for bulletin boards. They would do a job for arts and crafts though. Don’t write them off yet.
